What is yoga?

Is yoga working towards a handstand, or towards splits?

Is yoga holding hands, chanting with eyes closed while incense burns?

Is yoga for bendy people?

Let's find out!

Yoga as a practice and Yoga as a state

Traditionally, yoga is defined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as:

'Yoga is the neutralisation of the fluctuations of the mind.'

Yoga is both:

  • The practise of training the mind

  • The state where thoughts no longer pull us around

Why this still matters today

The questions ancient yogis asked are the same ones we ask now:

💭 Why can’t I just be happy?

💭 Why do bad things happen?

💭 Why don’t I feel fulfilled, even when things look good on paper?

Yoga philosophy helps us answer these questions. Far from being outdated, the teachings from the scriptures offer a framework for understanding the human mind - and how to work with it (rather than against it. 👀)
